Police avert car bomb 'carnage'

A car bomb planted in central London would have caused "carnage" if it had exploded, police sources have said.
A controlled explosion was carried out on the car, packed with 60 litres of petrol, gas cylinders and nails, in Haymarket, near Piccadilly Circus.

An ambulance crew saw smoke coming from the green metallic Mercedes, near the Tiger Tiger nightclub at 0130 BST.

"International elements" are believed to be involved, Whitehall sources told the BBC.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Peter Clarke, head of Scotland Yard's counter-terrorism command, said: "It is obvious that if the device had detonated there could have been serious injury or loss of life."

The ambulance had been called to the nightclub to treat a sick man when they spotted smoke, now believed to be vapour, inside the car.

Bomb experts manually disabled the "potentially viable explosive device".

For once one of these horrible disasters is prevented, and yet a lot of people can't just be glad about that because they're too busy blaming everything scary in the news on the big government conspiracy to keep us afraid. Wake up, people.

UK agents 'did have role in IRA bomb atrocities'

The controversy over claims that Britain allowed two IRA informers to organise 'human bomb' attacks intensified this weekend.
A human rights watchdog has handed a report to the Police Service of Northern Ireland, which concludes that two British agents were central to the bombings of three army border installations in 1990.

Meanwhile the Police Ombudsman's Office in Belfast confirmed it is investigating allegations by the family of one victim that the bomb in Newry on 24 October 1990 could have been prevented.

There was a munitions expert on CNN that explained that the type of explosives in these cars would not have done much damage, in fact, if you were standing next to it, it might give you a headache and a flashburn but no major explosion as it was an incendiary device, not an explosive one, no nails leaving at supersonic speed to do damage to human flesh, But to hear the mainstream news, Fear-Fear-Fear, huge car bomb discovered in downtown London, Bullshit. As to your incompetence theory, they might have a few guys with some brain cells in the NSA-CIA etc. that could pull this off.

That's kind of what I was thinking too. How the hell can you ignite a gas canister with a mobile phone? And where was the 60 litres of petrol? That's about the full capacity of a mercedes tank. As far as i can see all that could have happened is the car goes on fire, and possibly the gas canisters would explode but wouldn't they just just blow out the top, they surely wouldn't rip apart. I watched a guy on telly showing us a bag of nails that were supposed to have been sent flying outwards with the explosion, I don't see how. And if the car was really a potential danger, they wouldn't be letting anyone near it, there could be a bomb hidden somewhere else in the car! If this is really the work of amatuers who clearly have no clue as to how to build a bomb, what the fuck were using mercedes for? Unless the cars were stolen, they haven't said. And how long does it take before a car gets towed? Would a terrorist leave a car sitting for that long, if it had a huge bomb sitting in the back seat? Unless it was the same guy, and realising he cocked up the first job he decides to try again.

If you're right, that's some pretty powerful evidence that this is not a government conspiracy. If they were really behind it, the bomb experts would have come back and said "Whoa, good thing we diffused these babies. They could have blown up the whole damn city! This shit was nuclear!" If I were going to fake a foiled terrorist plot to make people afraid, I wouldn't then tell everybody that what I saved them from was a harmless petrol bomb with some nails that couldn't really have done much damage.

We can't just brush off the threat because one terrorist didn't make a good enough bomb this time.

If we're talking about fear-mongering, the government pales in comparison to the conspiracy theorists, who do nothing but try to make people incredibly afraid of the vast government conspiracy that is successfully directing world events behind the scenes with sinister plans to keep us all in submission. Al-Qaeda isn't nearly as terrifying as the idea of a gigantic government conspiracy to fake terrorist attacks to keep us in a perpetual war for resources.

I really don't get how these conspiracy theorists point their fingers at the government and accuse them of fear-mongering, when that's all they ever do themselves! Honestly, have you ever read one of these conspiracy theorists who ever said not to be deathly afraid of what's going on in the world? I haven't.

Almost anyone has the brain cells to make a car bomb. I wasn't talking about brain cells. I was talking about motive, feasibility, and practicality. Whose idea was this? How did they propose it to everybody else and convince them to go along? How could they possibly decide to go ahead with such a risky plot, which would mean instant political suicide if they screw up? What moron could actually think that the potential benefit to themselves would outweigh the huge risks involved?
