MH for veg. HPS for flower. I get 6 under a 400 so 2-3 under a 250 should be great.

I recently helped someone else on the site thru a grow w/ a 250 hps start to finish and they got 6 oz. outa 3 plants . :thumbsup:

If you can keep it cool, MH is good for vegging. MH can get real hot. If you chose only one option for all phases of growth, an HPS is sufficient and is relatively cool, which means you can have a higher wattage even in a small space for maximum lumens.

If you only going to buy one ballast, I would reccomend an HPS, if you want to run MH on the HPS ballast you can get a conversion bulb, but if you want to run HPS on a MH ballast, you lose lumens on the conversion bulb.

ok soo ima get a hps and try to just use it start to finish but i will get a grow closet soon but im pretty much poor except for the small pleasures i have and i cant afford mary soo i just want to grow my own...

I'd advise buying all the light you can afford- you can do two really nice plants under the 400, if you just let them veg for an extra two weeks.

I think most of us have found that we outgrow gear pretty quick, and a lot of us have a small light or two kicking around that we don't use anymore.

It's like buying clothes for a kid- you buy on the edge of being too big, cause it'll be too small soon enough...

The hps will be fine for veg- your structure won't be as tight as it could be, but it'll be fine. If you want both, digi's are cool, and getting much cheaper... the switchable magnetic will be about $25US more than the hps in whatever wattage, and then the cost of the extra bulb, which should be about $100- no sense spending extra on the ballast so that you can run a crap bulb.

So yeah- I'd go 400hps, 400digi if I were feeling sassy...

Start to finish under HPS works great, it does tend to veg a little slower though. And growing for personal use is totally the way to go, some people may ask to buy some, tell them no. I learned that if you smoke alot of weed, and sell what you grow, you end up buying at least that much back off the street, and it dosent have the love you put into yours. That is unless you have a real big op going on, which I know nothing about. I always go for a 4'x4' area w/ 1000w HPS and end up running out before the next round is ready, maybee I smoke too much?
