Putin's Arctic invasion: Russia lays claim to the North Pole
Russian President Vladimir Putin is making an astonishing bid to grab a vast chunk of the Arctic - so he can tap its vast potential oil, gas and mineral wealth.
His scientists claim an underwater ridge near the North Pole is really part of Russia's continental shelf.
One newspaper printed a map of the "new addition", a triangle five times the size of Britain with twice as much oil as Saudi Arabia.
The dramatic move provoked an international outcry. The U.S. and Canada expressed shock and environment campaigners said it would be a disaster.
Observers say the move is typical of Putin's muscle-flexing as he tries to increase Russian power.
Under current international law, the countries ringing the Arctic - -Russia, Canada, the U.S., Norway, and Denmark (which owns Greenland) - are limited to a 200-mile economic zone around their coasts.

Putin's Arctic invasion: Russia lays claim to the North Pole
Russia has natural resources in siberia and the artic sea (and 20,000 nukes) to regain superpower status, minus an expensive and largly useless empire. The US is in a very poor position to challenge putins claims, the looming crisis with iran makes both russia oil and UN vote priceless. And amid claims of the looming destruction of america from everything from arabs to mexicans to global warming there is only one thing which can actually do it, those 20,000 nukes. Not saying that's likely, but the failure to buy up large portions of this nucleur material was a huge mistake. While we wallow in the quicksand of the middle east history goes on without us. The obvious market for this oil, minerals, timber, ect. is the waking giant to the south. An alliance against the west? Or perhaps the war that destroys a third rate planet circling an obscure star in an insignificant galaxy will have nothing with the US. Not quite sure if I find that comforting or not.

Putin's Arctic invasion: Russia lays claim to the North Pole
I agree that this insane war for oil is wearing down the whole of the US. The question is: what do we do? The existing Government is so enamored with Oil, that there is no reasoning with them, Bush-Cheney, both oil men, The conservative elites benefit from this agenda so the commoners get fubared. I can't see the solution, well I can, but I can't see it being implemented. Does anyone have the solution, a viable one, one that will override the elites and right wing fear mongers. I think they are too entrenched in the society to throw them out. The corporations will supply endless campaign moneys, and the sheeple will vote for what they hear or see the most of. It's kinda like if you cant change your place of residence, change your residence, I just haven't figured out how or where to go.

Putin's Arctic invasion: Russia lays claim to the North Pole
What's Russia doing that Canada and Denmark are not?
Northern Canada - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Since 1925, Canada has claimed the portion of the Arctic between 60°W and 141°W[1] longitude, extending all the way north to the North Pole: all islands in this region are Canadian territory and the territorial waters claimed by Canada surround these islands. Views of territorial claims in this region are complicated by disagreements on legal principles. Canada and the USSR/Russia have long claimed that their territory extends according to the sector principle to the North Pole. The United States does not accept the sector principle and does not make a sector claim based on its Alaskan arctic coast. Claims that undersea geographic features are extensions of a country's continental shelf are also used to support claims; for example the Denmark/Greenland claim on territory to the North Pole, some of which is disputed by Canada.
