The reason he didn't try to bullshit you is because unless you're buying from the grower, or a medicinal club, you can't guarantee a strain. 95% of the time what you might buy as 'Haze' or some other strain name is probably just good weed.
Temp and genetics. There is a big difference when you look at real purps, and temp purps. And no, 100% of the time when I buy haze it's real haze. And haze does have a "distinct" smell and appearance. If you actually bought different types of bud then shitty hydroponic generic dank from canada you would know this.
