Blair to become Middle East envoy

Tony Blair will be appointed to a high-profile role as international envoy to the Middle East today, according to government sources.

The job, on behalf of the Quartet of powers - the US, the EU, the UN and Russia - will be the first he takes on after stepping down as Prime Minister tomorrow.

The appointment is understood to have irritated Gordon Brown, the Chancellor, who does not want Mr Blair interfering in delicate Middle East issues.

The outgoing Prime Minister was head-hunted for the role by President George W Bush who approached him because he could open doors with both Israelis and Palestinians.

Mr Blair, who hands over to Mr Brown tomorrow, is known to be keen to continuing working on reconciliation between the Israelis and Palestinians, seeing a solution as vital to the wider challenge of delivering peace across the Middle East.

While Russia is said to have raised initial objections to Mr Blair's appointment, it is expected to be confirmed at a meeting of the Quartet in Jerusalem today.

The part-time position will allow Mr Blair to build up a portfolio of roles in other areas that interest him, such as climate change and Africa.

Downing Street refused to confirm the appointment last night. But it is understood a deal - including a salary for Mr Blair - has been agreed.
