Tehran - An Iranian cleric on Friday called the knighting of Indian-born British author Salman Rushdie a clear sign that Britain was on a confrontation course with the Muslim world.

'This award means that Britain is following a clear confrontation course with over 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide,' Ahmad Khatami said during Friday prayers in Tehran. Britain should know, he added, that it was not only acting 'stupidly,' but would 'eventually be the main loser in this matter.'
