Plant the seed as SOON as the root pokes out. If you wait, it is much easier to break. The root is brittle at this stage and handling it is NOT good.

Also, I NEVER plant the seed more than 1/2 inch below the soil surface. It has a limited supply of energy to poke itself up, and planting too deep is a common reason that seeds will fail to emerge.

Be sure that your soil has a fine tilth and no chunks over where the seed was.
