CFL's put out very little heat. The intensity of the light is lost very quickly after it leaves the bulb too. CFL's can be literally an inch or two away from the plants. The only problem with having the bulbs so close is allowing the leaves of the plant to touch the bulb. The bulb itself is fairly warm to the touch and will damage the foliage if it starts touching the bulb.

HID = As close as you can get it without cooking the plants.
If you're running an HID system and don't have a thermometer... you're heading the right way for a smack bottom..

yea ill move my plants closer to my lights then and ill make sure and tie them with lst before flowering...
