when they make beer they use hops and malted barly. malting is when they take the seeds and let them sit out untill they start to sprout then they put them in the mash to start making beer.What i was wondering, insted of malted barly could you use malted cannabis seeds insted.

I'm not sure what sort of sugar content the hempseed has, but it is certainly worth a try... you would have beer that is ALL cannabacea, as hops is the close cousin of cannabis
At any rate, sprouted hempseed would no doubt be a fabulous addition to multi-grain bread. Except that the shells are kinda tough. Hm.

What would be the point, other than to perhaps have a slightly cannibus taste to the beer?

Aren't all the intoxicants in the trichs?

yea, but there are other cannaboids in the plant material. i mean what other uses can you think of for seeds, besides growing them. you never know, the chemical reaction made by feeding sprouted seeds to yeast may produce some form of canaboid... or it would just make the beer taste a little skunk.

ive tried cannabis beer that was from europe but idk the name or what was actually in it besides beer but it tasted good

Humboldt brewing company makes a hemp ale, it tastes alright but not worth the price, so using pot seeds in beer should work.
But I'd reccomend using barley as well, both for taste and as stinkyattic said sugar.
Although alot of brew shops carry bags of sugar (not sure what kind of sugar) that is ment to be used for fermentation, so it may be possible to cut the barley out completely. I have tried homebrew made from wheat, and rye (no barley in either) and the wheat ale tasted ok, but the rye ale tasted like shit.
I say give it a try, if I had an abundance of pot seeds I sure would.

Oh and btw... you aren't gonna get high off the beer.
Cannabinoids would be at trace levels in the sprouts anyway, and then the action of the yeast during fermentation would probably destroy any that were there... I don't know enough about what the yeast can and cannot transform chemically to say for sure but I can guarantee what goes in and what comes out will be hella different.

The hemp seeds contain a lot of oil, it would prevent the beer from having any type of a head. And it would act more like soda as far as the carbonation.

You could modify the starches in hemp seed to smaller chains of glucose molecules (strings of 1 to 3 molecules in length so that they are small enough for the yeast to eat)

Basically you would perform a "mash" on the seeds in the same manner you would for grains through "enzymatic reactions" (alpha amylase / beta amylase) to produce the modified sugars.

Once the sugars are in place you could "sparge" the spent seeds and continue to your hop schedule. So yes it is possible, and actually likely it would work, you just need a way to remove the oil at some point so it turns out like real beer.

That's how we do it in the industry with some adjuncts, this one would be no different.

Oh and the yeast doesn't seem to destroy any of the THC if using straight bud, mushrooms work well also, and actually begin to form mycelia in the sterile fermentors, (really trippy stuff).

If you are using hemp seeds there will be way too low of a CBD / THC level to get any high from it, but the flavor would come across. Could be fun to try, and maybe add some bud for potency (that does work if done properly). :thumbsup:

i was thinking of trying it out on a micro brew kit. my grandfather has this neet setup he doesn't use anymore. Thanks for the info guys. i'll let you all know how it goes.
