U.S.: NATO has intercepted Iranian arms

PARIS - NATO has intercepted Iranian weapons shipments to Afghanistan's Taliban insurgents, providing evidence Iran is violating international law to aid a group it once considered a bitter enemy, a senior U.S. diplomat said Wednesday.

"There's irrefutable evidence the Iranians are now doing this," Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns said on CNN. "It's certainly coming from the government of Iran. It's coming from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard corps command, which is a basic unit of the Iranian government."

Speaking separately to The Associated Press, Burns said NATO must act to stop the shipments. The Iran-Afghanistan frontier is "a very long border. But the Iranians need to know that we are there and that we're going to oppose this."

"It's a very serious question," he said, adding that Iran is in "outright violation" of U.N. Security Council resolutions.

Burns did not give details on the scope of the alleged Iranian shipments, although he appeared to indicate that they were limited. "I don't think it's made a substantial difference in the greater theater of the war," he said.

"It is not going to turn the tide against us, but it is very troublesome, it is illegal under international law ... and the Iranians need to stop it," Burns told the AP.

One has to wonder if invading sovereign nations isn't somehow illegal under international law too.

Well damn, I'd call this enough evidence to convince even my sceptical mind. Not that I really doubted the reslove of Tehran, but I never liked the idea of jumping into a war before sufficient evidence is provided. Sometimes you're right (Iran), sometimes you're wrong (Iraq).

I still say we don't go jumping into a war right off the bat. God knows it was enough of a problem when we sent soldiers into Iraq under-equipped, if war really is necessary then we need to carefully plan everything out and set up a strategy to counter every Iranian counter-attack plausible. They'll definately put up a better fight than Saddam's military.

Right now though, It's time to lay it down on these assholes. I think the UN and NATO now have ample justification for the tightest sanctions and even an outrigh collective western war effort. We need to send Ahmadinejad a clear message right now "we've got you red handed, we have an international force ready to depose you, and you so much as look at us the wrong way and we're coming down on you". No more negotiations, no more giving him a single inch, he can get down on his knees and kiss our western asses with an outright apology. The guy doesn't have a legal leg to stand on.

Dude, we're talking about Iran, not Iraq. And if you are talking about Iran, there's such thing as a legal pretext for war. Considering they're arming enemy militarys, and I'm sure we'll find out they're training them too soon enough, that seems like pretty clear justification to me.

Yeah, It's kinda like muslims helping muslims. You can't hardly blame Iran, They are just helping fellow muslims. It's sort of like "the enemy of my enemy must be my friend", even if they were once enemys, America is a bigger threat to the region than the taliban. How would we like Russia to be circling America and making overtures of war? Ya kinda have to have some vision here to see the real deal. Yep. The US has armed many militias that overthrew governments, often democratically elected governments, and then installed dictators. If the democratically elected government that was being overthrown were to invade the US on such premis's, I'd say they have full rights to do so. Of course the U.S. isn't about to dick around like that with nations that could actually retaliate on the scale of invasion.
