germination..by princess...as requested...
here you go weedhound....as requested.....a princess post on germination...
germinating a seed is kindof like bringing it back to life...they are like little sleeping beauties.....there are several ways to go about waking them....the key is both darkness, and moisture....good germination is important...this is when the root forms....this is...where life begins...
the method used depends on how you are growing them...hydroponics has its own way, but i am going to talk about soil....i dont know anything about hydro....lol
i think the most popular way is the paper towel method..take a few paper towels, make them damp...they shouldnt be able to ring out...place the seeds between the layers on a plate and put them in a dark place and keep them moist...
i like the paper towel method in a cup...again, take 2 or 3 paper towels and wet them..place them around the inside of a plastic cup, like from a slurpee.. (washed and stuff, of course...) then you drop the seeds between the towels and the cup sides...put in a dark place, keep it moist with a spray bottle....
the sponge method...i have never tried this, but lots use it.....take a moist sponge, and place the seeds in the holes of the sponge..cover it with a moist paper towel, and again, keep it moist and put it in a dark place...
coffee cup.....you can put the seeds in a coffee cup with some water and put a plate over it...best to put this somewhere there is heat... (it should not float...)
lastly, you can just put them in moist soil, but that isnt always the best way...the other ways, you sprout it first and know if you will actually have a plant....
** some side notes...
after your baby has sprouted and cracked from its womb, just lay it on top of some moist soil..fresh soil, plain soil, with a ph of 6.5 to 7.5, and cover it with a little throw of more moist (not wet!) soil....after this, i put them under fluoros, a couple inches above, in a cup...do not push the sprout down into the soil and whatnot, just set them on top of the soil..when they start to gro up, i like to take them out of the cup and replace them in soil up to their necks..i believe this strengthens the root...
seeds have a decent shelf life if you store them right...in a dark area, sealed..
you can sprout in 1 day, you can sprout in 5..dont panic... (i always suggest the coffee cup method if you are unsure...a good seed will not float, and if it is a little dry, the constant moisture is a big help for cracking the shell open...)
so, that is that...my first big post, and a request at that....
