you gotta wait until flowering to tell if its a male or female, for that reason most growers plant more then they need so they can pull the males before they get too big.
And the rule of thumb on sativa and indica is the leaves. Sativa usually has skinnier, medium to light green leaves. While indica has fatter medium to dark green leaves.
