There should institute a new rule in driving:

If you can't do a perfect doughnut, you can't get your license

Here in Texas, they're about to implement some types of driving tests for seniors now when they go to renew their licenses after the age of 70 or 75, I can't remember which. They may already have done so. I think that's a good thing.

I had a grandfather who drove until he was 96 and should have stopped 20 years before that. He would drive down the absolute middle of the street in his small town with no consideration for whoever else might be on the road. He'd also veer up onto sidewalks when we was trying to park or, sometimes, if he just changed his mind and decided do a wide-angle U-turn in the middle of the street. People told my mom that it got to the point where when the pedestrians and other drivers who were nearest to him and first saw him coming would shout the warning, "Watch out! Here comes Mr. Williamson," and pedestrians would flee and other cars would make themselves scarce.

My mom and uncle kept taking his keys away from him, but he'd keep having new ones made. Finally they sold his car and hired a "minder" to keep an eye on him and take him where he wanted to go--like the domino hall. He was furious about that. But he had no business being out in a car!

I had a good friend whose elderly grandma probably shouldn't have been out driving and somehow managed to get her car stalled up on some train tracks and was killed when the oncoming train couldn't stop in time. Accidents like that with seniors happen all the time. I worked as a paramedic a good many years ago. There are lots of seniors out there who have no business being behind the wheel. Of course, there are plenty of others, too. When my time comes to stop driving, I think I'll give up the privilege willingly. I'd be just fine if someone else chauffered me around. Heck, I'd be fine with it now!

My lady's car and spine were seriously damaged whe she was hit by a 93 year old man... THREE TIMES!
He rear ended her, then drove around and sideswiped her, then backed up and hit her again.
I think everyone should have to pass regular cognitive testing to keep their license. A young fool is just as dangerous as an old fool.
