And to me there is absolutely no difference between 'underground' and 'mainstream'...it's all music, but if you insist...

1. "Underground" is more of a broad term used to describe independent. Independent hip hop is entirely different from commercial hip hop, or what you would most likely call "mainstream"...

Independent hip hop is called a few of these things by haters and the like:

emo rap
nerd rap
backpacker music
etc.

Commercial hip hop is called gangster rap by most of its fans...

You see the subtle differences between "emo and nerd" and "gangster"...

2. So even if they are different, all music is music huh? So by that logic a pastel painting is the same as a fingerpainting? They're both just paintings right?

Or, heres something hopefully you can relate to... Schwag is the same as purp basically... There's absolutely no difference between the two, right? They're both just weed...

And we both know that's not true... I mean, jeez, think of all the care taken in growing a purple haze plant... And all the neglect of growing some dirt.

Let's take a little further and compare purple haze to indy rap, and compare the dirt weed to gangster rap...

The independent rappers were for the most part raised in the suburbs, they're smart, insightful, have a variety of topics, etc... It's appreciated by your more than average hip hop head

Like the haze plant which was raised meticulously in excellent conditions... Your hardcore pot head enjoys the purp the most, cause it's clearly better right?


And the dirt? Well, it's raised in piss poor lighting and accidentally got Windex sprayed on it a few times when you was cleaning the windows... Kind of like gangster rap... Who enjoys the dirt weed? Your beginner pot smoker... And who enjoys gangster rap? Your average hip hop head...

And who cares how good Lil' Wayne is... being the best mainstream rapper still makes you the smartest retard... Still sucks...

Basically said that TO ME, I don't care what you call it...mainstream, independant, underground, blah blah blah...if I like it..I like it, if it's good, it's good. I think it's immature to like ONLY underground or ONLY mainstream just based on stereotypes...mainstream=gangsta rap...that's dumb, a lot of underground artists spit 'gangsta rap', it's a genre of rap, it doesn't mean 'mainstream' LOL, if anything, it's the opposite of mainstream. My favorites that I listed are because I like them, but I also think they are the best at what they do, better than all types of artists...that post might be the dumbest one I've read on this site...you compare Purple Haze [which doesn't exist lol] to underground LOL! If anything, the one's that made it are the dank buds, and the independant artists are the swaggity swagg trying to make a name, but can't quite get there [I know this isn't always the case].

Most artists were underground at one point obviously, but a lot were just smarter than others and turned their talent into a business opportunity. Not selling out, just being smart, why be broke or work a shitty job?...you don't call an artist who sells their painting's a sell out, just a good business man/woman.

Basically, saying that something only holds true to YOU still makes you wrong... You can choose to believe theres no difference, but you're still wrong...

If you would read a little more carefully, I explained how independent rap is classed as underground when it's more than that... No independent rapper I can think of spits gangster rap, and I could probably name a couple hundred...

And what mainstream rap these days isn't gangster? There's maybe 4 or 5 groups or rappers that don't talk about how they killed somebody or sold some drugs, so fuck that logic.

The underground rappers not being able to make it is hardly ever the case... Take Slug from Atmosphere... He is RICH!! A millionaire, and still on an independent level, and still considers himself and is considered an underground rapper.

And it's fine if you think mainstream rap is better or whatever, that's all opinions, and I was just stating my opinion and showing you why there definitely are multiple subgenres of rap...

"7 Minute Freestyle" with Jay-Z is a work of art...the flow is water through a hose and the multi's are ridiculous. Some pretty graphic, violent lyrics, but the detail is what makes it what it is. Then of course "Ebonics", and his first album is one of the best. He's a great example of one who can't really be categorized. His first album wasn't a commercial success, but that's only because it didn't have the resources to promote it. His second album was certified Platinum in a month with a few #1 hits...does that make him mainstream/commercial?...I don't think so.

EDIT: 304...it's just opinion man, chill out...you think I'm wrong and I think you're wrong, so be it. I have all kinds of underground shit, and I like a lot of it. But I just think a Jigga metaphor or a Jadakiss punchline is a lot more interesting than political stances and bullshit nonsense. Nas and Em are more lyrical than most...even the underground artists would tell you that, and they have better songs than some people's careers. You have to look at the whole picture...the songs, the production, the lyrics, flow, rhymes...some people like some things and other people like other things. I have an open mind, and could give a shit less about the categorization of 'underground' or 'mainstream' fool.
