You've gotta get up pretty early in the morning to beat BFA with a brain teaser. Also, the story sort of gives it away. The only one who's clearly going to St. Ives is the storyteller. The man and his wives can be assumed to simply be somewhere along the way, probably with a cardboard sign trying to give away sacks. And cats. And kittens.
