looks like they think they can make in roads into the fundamentalist voting block by paying lip-service to christian values. considering the fundies' ingrained mistrust of mormons and catholics, such a trick might actually work. isn't it wonderful how these politicians can use people's bigotry for their own ends and make it seem damn near honorable.
