Good storyline, plot, scripts and voice acting in your video games.

From my experience on gaming boards, this subject can be a touchy one depending on the degree of stances between individuals.

I have been gaming for 20 years now, from the Sega Master System to the Xbox 360. My gaming tastes have evolved over time. For certain genres, (and by that I mean any genre that gives you a point or a reason for what you are doing, one that is forced to tell a storyline, this includes Action, Adventure, RPG, Platformers, FPS..etc.) for those genres I feel that the storyline should be well done, well thought out, well scripted and well acted. This does not mean that I think all storylines should be long and complicated. A simple and to the point storyline can still be told and presented well. A story can also still be silly and yet well done, look at this last generations Grand Theft Auto games to atest to that.

When I was a little kid, corny generic plots were perfectly fine. I could care less the Princess was in another castle or that All your base belong to us. I was a kid with a short attention span so didn't care. But now I'm an adult and that stuff doesn't cut it, nor does long but horribly bad storylines work either. For me when a game includes a crappy plotline or even if it's just the voice acting being bad, it really brings down my enjoyment of the game, and in some cases even ruins it.

I absolutely detest the Devil May Cry series purely because of it's horrible plot atrocious script and even worse voice acting. The games make me want to vomit. Meanwhile there is nothing horribly special or unique about the storylines/plotlines of God of War or Halo but they are presented extremely well and for that they make the game so much more enjoyable. Look at say The Legend of Zelda for instance, more specifically Ocarina of Time. Plot wise there is practically nothing new or original in it nothing other than the tried and true formula of Link saving Zelda from Ganon, there is hardly any sizeable amount of scripting and besides some laughs and grunts no voice acting. Yet Nintendo manages to present what little is there so well, that the game is emotionally moving.

I think it's high time personally that we as gamers demand that if a developer makes a game that includes a storyline, they should put the same care into it as the rest of their game. Otherwise we don't want it.

Perhaps I'm just spoiled, after experiencing amazing and amazingly told storylines such as that found in games like the Legacy of Kain Series, Vagrant Story, Knights of the Old Republic..etc.

The story mode in Syphon Filter: Dark MIrror for the PSP is quite good, it's very tastefully done. I know what you mean though, sometimes they can get way too compliacted, Metal Gear Ac!d for example.

A good story never hurts, but as long as the game plays well and its actually fun, story isn't that much of a necessity

This makes me think of Starcraft. Starcraft is a real time strategy game and I beleave that without a story line the game play would be a little bit blah. The Battle Chest shipped with page a book of story line.

I'm a huge gamer myself, but I must admit, I don't care all too much for storylines. I voted the second option. I mean if they're there, then good, but not required to be in game for me to enjoy it.

For example take Metal Gear Solid. The game has an absolute great storyline, but reading through it all or listneing to it all for a long time can get a bit boring and I will find myself skipping through some of it to began playing already. So, bottom line, good stoylines can be a good thing, or a bad thing.
