Yes everyone is correct you should transplant into larger pots. Just make sure you have extra dranage and plenty of holes to get the water out.

To answer your other question about roots, yes light will kill your roots and if enough die from being root bound and light your plant will suffer from shock and have a lower then expected yield and quality.
