Car problem
If that is what I think it is, that's a huge relief- I was figuring around 5-600 bucks, but 2-300 doesn't sound bad at all, if they DO need to be replaced.
I WILL AWARD A PRIZE!Purple Banana Reviewed by Purple Banana on . Car problem I have a 93 Toyota Tercell with 180,000 miles. Everytime I slow down to 2mph or to a stop, my engine idles and the check engine light goes on- I have to put my car in park and keep my foot lightly on the gas pedal at stoplights to keep it from turning off completely. I have an appt. tommorw at a local auto shop, but I know there are some gearheads on here who might be able to tell me what might be going on with my baby- price estimates, anyone? Rating: 5

Try running Lucas fuel injection cleaner through your fuel system that stuff works great. you can find it at most auto part stores..
Also check your air cleaner/filter. look/listen for any loose vacuum hoses that could be leaking.. or it could be a simple clogged fuel filter...
good luck and keep us posted...

Might be a bad sensor for the EGR and it is open when it needs to be shut,,,or a piece of crap is lodged in it keeping it slightly open...

Dont do fuel injector cleaner if it's not used to it,,,you will dislodge every piece of crap in you gas tank and line and def clog the injectors... if it is dirty injectors let the gas station clean them...
if you can hold off,,,post what the gas station says to you and run it by us...

yeah sounds like fuel injectors to me get some injector cleaner at any auto parts store if this does not work you might need new injectors or it could be something else if it is not the injectors i would replace the fuel filter and check the sparkplugs and if there is carbon deposit bridging the gap between the electrodes then replace sparkplugs

Car problem
could be the timing
could be a fuel problem
could even be an airflow problem.
if it doesn't backfire i'd put improper spark plug gapping outta the question.

wow i just read over the posts, i can't believe NO ONE said timing :stoned: that's one of the leading causes improper idling... x.x
which made me wonder another question...
when was the last time it was worked on? timiing usually doesn't just go out on it's own... but even heavy jarring CAN move the distrubutor cap which plays a major role in timing (and timing is everything to an engine, improper timing can do everything from iradditc idling to rendering the engine completely useless unless adjusted back to it's proper setting)

never know what those mechanics do by accident, or on purpose to get you back.....
