Cannabis is illegal, and the vast majority selling it are doing so with maximum profits and personal safety in mind. So what kind of plants do they grow? They pick species that have really big buds and grow in a short amount of time, more to sell and a smaller time frame in which to be caught.

Because of this the average joes like me
(who are probably six degrees of seperation away from the one who actually grew the pot to our dealers)
will never get to try the thousands of species of herb out there, all those exotic and origional plants that take a few more weeks to grow or tend to have slightly smaller yields.

Our laws play a huge role in the kind of bud we get the privelege to smoke
