Iran president sees "countdown" to Israel's end

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's president said on Sunday the Lebanese and the Palestinians had pressed a "countdown button" to bring an end to Israel.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who triggered outrage in the West two years ago when he said Israel should be "wiped off the map", has often referred to the destruction of the Jewish state but says Iran is not a threat.

"With God's help, the countdown button for the destruction of the Zionist regime has been pushed by the hands of the children of Lebanon and Palestine," Ahmadinejad said in a speech.

"By God's will, we will witness the destruction of this regime in the near future," he said. He did not elaborate.

Iran often praises the Palestinians for what it says is their resistance against Israeli occupation. Tehran also described the war last summer between Hezbollah in Lebanon and Israel as a victory for the Iranian-backed group.

"If you make a mistake and create another war against the oppressed Lebanese nation, this time the angry ocean of the nations of the region will remove your rotten ... roots from the region," the president said in another speech on Sunday night.

Ahmadinejad's speeches were made ahead of ahead of Monday's anniversary of the death in 1989 of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic, whose words Ahmadinejad echoed when he called for Israel to be "wiped off the map".

The president's comments caused consternation in Israel and the West, which also fear Iran is seeking to build an atomic arsenal under cover of a civilian nuclear power programme, a charge Tehran denies.

Although Ahmadinejad has said Iran is not a threat to Israel, Iranian officials have said Tehran would respond swiftly to any Israeli attack. Some analysts have speculated Israel could seek to knock out Iran's atomic sites.

You know..I don't wish to get into the whole Iraq situation here, but this is definitely where America should be stepping in. Unfortunately, with the surge in opposition to Iraq, I fear America will not even give the chance for their president to enter Iran...I think people may feel that Iran is just as off limits as Iraq should have been, although sadly this is not the case...that guy scares the shit outta me...for real.

well, don't get me wrong bud, I hate that your country entered Iraq. I do. HOWEVER, I am smart enough to understand that the situation is serious enough to not cut and run, as the democrats will do. It's weird to listen to myself say this but now, after seeing what has come out of the invasion(the offshoots of terror cells, anti-western sentiment in many areas), I think the job must be finished. I don't believe for one second that your President really wants Iraq to be a prided democracy and because of that he must be some excellent guy trying to help the country...he just is scared that the guys he helped out have turned on him and now he needs to take 'em out before he gets bitch slapped.

Whatever the reasons were that he entered are now irrelevant. The point is he's there. A lot of troops are there. And they have a job to do. If they pull out now, leaving the country more immersed in civil war than ever, what does that accomplish. America might as well but a big fuckin' bullseye in the middle of the country when the democrats get in..cause they think it's terrible and will stop giving it attention...we all know what happens when you just "forget about terrorism"..it strikes your heart. Those who have died, the time and effort into the war...is all for what if America just leaves now? A worse situation. That's bullshit, we know it will get worse if the Americans cut and run, so for the sake of peace, ya might as well finish wut u started. Another discussion you and I could agree on would be can it be done. Is your country's war on terror possible to win? Not with a change in administration who opposes the current direction of things...

But with this new Iran shit, I have to say....jesus god someone do something. He is eerily reminiscent of Hitler, in the sense that the West refuses to take any serious action so as not to be taken aggressive, when really they should. Some shit the West overlooked before Hitler was so clearly obvious, yet everyone "just wanted peace"...well, we know how that turned out.
The instability in our world scares me to death right now. Anyone else?

Iran is no threat to the USA. There are greater threats to us than Iran. I'd put China and Packistan on the top of the list. Musharif is just a sniper shot away from a taliban takeover and china is buying our country with our own dollars. If we had any brains (the Govt.) they would be kissing Irans ass. Iran has a shitload of oil and I'm pretty convinced that if the US govt would kiss up they would gladly come around. To try and take their oil forcefully is the right wing neoconic strategy and as you can see, it would be a fiasco. they have a million man army and would overrun Iraq in a heartbeat, killing every American in country By the time you bombed them back to the stone age, every muslim country in the region would be involved, Isreal would be put to the fire and out would come the nukes. Don't be surprised if a few nukes didn't make it to the homeland, goodby all my millionaire dreams, ~LOL~.

I don't think strategics will so much work with the Iranians. That guy has his own plan, and he doesn't shy away from interference..more alarmingly, he completely disregards opposition. Iran may not be a sole threat to the US...think of the others who may join in...Russia, N.Korea...and pretty much every radical anti-american/western group...oh and the Chinese..Russia and China have shown where their interests lie.
Plus, the Americans would never kiss some other country's ass...especially not Iran

Diplomacy is the only thing that will work with Iran, beating the war drums will not solve anything and as far as bombing the shit out of Iran well if you can live with WW3 then go ahead.I dont want to see a couple of hundred thousand dead Iranians many of them women and children, nor do i want to see that many dead from the west.

Have a good one!:s4:[/QUOTESo I guess you would use option B. Well there goes the neighborhood. No more dreaming about getting rich, eh. If Iran goes postal, you can kiss Iraq goodby and probably your own ass. I can never figure out why talking to your enemies is a bad thing.[color=Red][/COL"To know your enemy, you must become your enemy ... Keep your friends close and your enemies closer." This familiar quote is from Sun Tzu (China - 400 B.C.), author of On the Art of War.
