Putin in nuclear threat against Europe

President Vladimir Putin has sent a chilling message to world leaders on the eve of the G8 summit with a threat to aim Russian nuclear missiles at European cities for the first time since the Cold War.

In comments that seemed calculated to cause consternation and division at Wednesday's meeting in Germany, the Russian leader said that American plans to erect a missile defence shield in eastern Europe had left him with no choice but to retaliate.

Vladimir Putin acknowledged that targeting Europe would escalate an arms race he says has already begun

"It is obvious that if part of the strategic nuclear potential of the United States is located in Europe we will have to respond," he told reporters from G8 countries in Moscow at the weekend.

"What kind of steps are we are going to take in response? Of course we are going to acquire new targets in Europe."

Mr Putin's anti-western rhetoric has grown more strident since Washington confirmed plans to locate 10 interceptor missiles in Poland and a radar station in the Czech Republic by 2012 - a project he believes is directed at Russia.

I think he should be a bit more concerned about supplying his Chechen friends with nuclear technology.

That would be a bad idea. Other than having a few nukes Russia is broke and would not stand a chance without legitimate allies that were willing to fight to the death.

I'm not a fan of Russians or their foreign policy but I have to say that I agree with Putin. Here's the U.S. ever encroaching on everyone's territory, why shouldn't they be alarmed if we have nukes right outside their country? After all, its exactly what they did during the cold war / cuban missile crisis! Keep in mind too that to "acquire" new targets is as simple as input in a computer and a new destination is set. So for Putin to try and make himself sound more ominous about "reacquiring targets" is just plain silly. Neither Russia nor the U.S. wants a nuclear holocaust its all just rhetorical.

It is a provocation by the USA, Putin is right. As was said in the previous post, remember Cuban missle crises. I don't like or approve of Putin or his crackdown on democracy in Russia, but there are criminal elements in Russia that basically took over the democratic businesses and are running a gangland style of democracy, so maybe some governmental control is necessary.

This is a Defense system with interceptor missiles; NOT an offensive weapon at all. Comparing apples to oranges just to feed your hate.........chill bro!

SOOOOOO when we have things like the Patriot Act, etc... to take out the criminal element that's bad but for Russia it's necessary?

If we keep having things like the Patriot act, it will be just like living in Russia. The corporate criminals in this country have had a long time to gain sophistication in their criminal operations, and to get the laws on their side. The government is just their partner in crime. Why do you think lobbiests exist? I'll answer that, to keep the government lawmakers in line with the corporate agenda.
