Curb Sonny Carson St., says Hizzoner
Mayor Bloomberg blasted a City Council proposal to name a Brooklyn street after controversial black activist Sonny Carson.
"I think there's probably nobody whose name I could come up with who less should have a street named after him in this city than Sonny Carson," Bloomberg said yesterday after speaking at the Memorial Day Parade in Laurelton, Queens.
"That's probably the worst idea the City Council, anybody in the City Council, has had in recent memory," Bloomberg said.
His comments prompted an angry response from City Councilman Charles Barron, who supports the proposal to name part of Gates Ave. after Carson.
"Tell the mayor to take a walk through Brooklyn and see the name of Thomas Jefferson, a slave-holding pedophile, and tell me he is better than Sonny Carson," Barron (D-Brooklyn) said.
Carson led protests against police brutality in the 1980s and founded the Black Men's Movement Against Crack. He was arrested for murder in 1974, served 15 months in prison and was convicted of kidnapping. His book, "The Education of Sonny Carson," became a movie.
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn (D-Manhattan) also has opposed the plan, saying Carson was a divisive figure who called himself "anti-white."
Last month, the Council removed Carson's name from a list of more than 50 people to be honored with street renamings, saying it should be voted on as a separate matter.
The other street renamings are scheduled to come for a vote at tomorrow's Council meeting. But some Council members, including Barron, are expected to push for Carson's to be included.
"Sonny Carson is a hero to our community," Barron said. "We are going to name Gates Ave. after him whether the mayor and the speaker like it or not."

WARNING! This is a highly sensitive issue so lets all try to get through this with some "well thought" debate.
I find it amazing that they would even try to name a street after someone that was a racist and spent time for kidnapping. This comes right after the U.S. got to witness Imus being chastised across the media by Reverend Al Sharpton. Where is the Reverends outcry regarding this?

Reverend Al's outcry is in his boyfriend Bill O'Reilly's bedroom, where they likely also came up with the idea to put former Black Panther Charles Barron on O'Reilly's TV show in April to promote his fringe's stand on immigration and racism.
Other than that, it was voted down, and that's all there is to it.
