I would say that it is better to put the plant directly into the soil as it is not bound by any pot and the roots can grow as much as they'd like. Be sure the soil is not just soil from your backyard.

If you transplant your little fella outdoors while it is still small, you may want to cover it with something such as a 2 litre bottle that can fit over it if a storm is approaching or high winds.
