I have a much more simple method of making bongs. Having made quite a few for myself and friends, Ill give you a little tutorial.

1) Take a 20oz coke bottle (or something equivilent)
2) Using a small flathead screwdriver, poke a hole about here:

3) Find a socket wrench set, and find a socket thats about the size of the bowl you want to use.
4) Find any metal pipe that will fit inside the butt end of the socket, but make sure its not too small and ill explain why in a second.
5) Buy some high grade epoxy. THe kind in a plastic conatiner that looks like a syrenge, with two different solutions on each side. Squeeze out some epoxy and mix it together well, then using the same small flathead screwdriver apply it thickly to the metal pipe and socket head.
6) The epoxy I buy usually takes about 10 mins to harden and set, depending on which you bought just wait for it to dry. Check for any leaks in the epoxy job you just did, and if there arent any move on to step 7. If you find any leaks, just mix up more epoxy and fill them.
7) Enlarge the hole you made in step 2 according to the size of your metal downpipe. Then, once its the right size (not too big not too small) glue on the pipe using the epoxy.
8) Make another hole for the carb. I found a trick to doing this, hold the bottle in the exact way you would if you were to be smoking from it. Look at where whatever finger you use to block the carb is (in my case my index finger) and hold your finger there while grabbing the screwdriver. Then just make your hole where your carb finger is, and it will be very ergonomical while smoking.
9) Wait for all your epoxy to dry, make sure any leaks are filled using your epoxy, and there you have an A quality home made bong.

HAPPY SMOKING!
