My friend and I do it this way to make the plants look like bushes from the air. It works for us and we have had great harvests regardless. I'm not saying it's correct, I'm saying it works.

Me and my friend were very bored yesterday and, upon realizing that we had quite the stash of seeds(just 60 or so), we drove to some property that he owns. We start clearing out our planting spot and dig up the dirt to get the rocks and roots out of the ground. We built a mound of dirt and placed the seeds inside.
