1 plant per sq ft isnt really even enough space outdoors unless you was growing lowryder or so late in the season that the plant would remain small.
chances are not very many will even come up depending on how good the seeds were to begin with and if his intentions was just to start them in one spot and transplant them as seedlings once they come up and are 2-3 weeks old is fine, if he intends to just leave a bunch of plants competing for each other then he may be an idiot.

Me and my friend were very bored yesterday and, upon realizing that we had quite the stash of seeds(just 60 or so), we drove to some property that he owns.
