Is My Friend An Idiot?

Me and my friend were very bored yesterday and, upon realizing that we had quite the stash of seeds(just 60 or so), we drove to some property that he owns.

We start clearing out our planting spot and dig up the dirt to get the rocks and roots out of the ground. We built a mound of dirt and placed the seeds inside. I was expecting to plant maybe 4 or 5 per mound, but he puts about 40 of them in. I ask him if that is a good idea and when he asks why wouldn't it be, I explain that the too many plants in one short radius will compete for water and sunlight, therefore they'd be killing themselves.

He insisted we do it and, since he's grown a little in the past and his dad used to grow, I just took his word for it because frankly, I don't know shit about growing.

I'm just curious.. though, is planting that many seeds in one mound a really bad idea or not?

i second that....with a bunch of them together the roots are going to all tangle up so how is he going to seperate the males from the females? Also once the females start to flower they're not going to have enough room for each to get the light since they are all crammed together.

one friend of mine did that too, he plant a bunch of seeds on same spot, i just think these people are too lazy even to do something for them :P

1 plant per sq ft isnt really even enough space outdoors unless you was growing lowryder or so late in the season that the plant would remain small.
chances are not very many will even come up depending on how good the seeds were to begin with and if his intentions was just to start them in one spot and transplant them as seedlings once they come up and are 2-3 weeks old is fine, if he intends to just leave a bunch of plants competing for each other then he may be an idiot.

I knew it! When I told him this today he said "well than buy 40 pots". The kid's pretty strange in the mental department so I'm thinking he did this to try and prove a point because I know he's not that stupid. Well, he is.. but usually not about things dealing with street smarts.

usually leave about 3 ft of space between plants.
