wow, a lot of great guitarists have been named.
kudos to the guy who mentioned Les Paul, without him, NONE of the others would have followed.

and i can't believe noone mentiond Jeff Beck, i mean, shit man, he's gotta be on the list!

YouTube - Jeff Beck - Nadia (North Sea Jazz 2006)

my personal favs are SRV first, that guy had a gift from God.
Jimi Hendrix comes in at a VERY close second, another man with a true gift.

after that there are several, Frank Zappa, Satriani, Vai, Beck, Santana etc..., etc..., etc...

i also second Stinky's mention of Bonnie Raitt, she also plays a mean piano and writes straight to the heart.
and, while maybe not one of the best ever, Susan Tedeschi aint too shabby either man

YouTube - Bonnie Raitt - Love Me Like a Man (live)

And whats all this talk about drummers and bass players, they're not musicians surely everybody knows that!

You heard the jokes ain't ya?

What do you call someone that hangs around musicians? A drummer

What does a bass player use for contraception? His personality

Question to richie sambora (bon jovi guitarist)
"what would you be if you weren't a musician"

    Richie's answer, "i'd be a drummer"

    lol
robert johnson is not the king of blues, that is bb king. you may not agree with it, i dont agree michael jackson is the king of pop, but thats the way it is. i think most people who slurp robert johnson have never taken the time to listen to him or theyd have been lulled into a boredom induced coma. especially a kid born in 88. good to see you reading the latest rolling stone lists. highly influential, yes. best ever? not even close.

so uh, if i read your post correctly, you're saying people should go into a boredom induced coma from listening to Robert Johnson? wtf, how is that possible? have you even heard Terraplane blues? or Crossroads blues? i can't stop tapping my foot when i listen to him. Maybe not the best, but way better than bb king imo.

as for my favorite guitarists...i can't pick one so my top 10 in no particular order:

    Pat Metheny
    John Scofield
    Al Dimeola
    Allan Holdsworth
    Jimi Hendrix
    SRV
    Elliott Smith
    Nick Drake
    Robert Johnson
    Derek Trucks

    honorable mention:
Guthrie Govan (i can't listen to him without my jaw hitting the floor every time)
    Frank Gambale (amazing jazz guitarist)
Frank Zappa (probably the coolest person ever)
    John Petrucci (dream theater, ftw)
Rock Whittington (ex-guitarist for amazing band called damiera)
