Are leaves on a plant really necessary?
Yes leaves on a plant are necessary. I would not recommend ever taking them off unless it's already dying or dead or very close to harvest.

Are leaves on a plant really necessary?
The leaves provide surface area for the plant to absorb sunlight, and that is essential to photosynthesis. It's how the plant lives. If it weren't essential, the plant would not have them, because it would be able to live without them. It's all about evolution. It has evolved to produce the most effective way of absorbing sunlight... so cutting the leaves up to make it look misleading would make it less effective. And I'm sure these aren't the only reasons that the leaves look like they do. So no, don't cut the leaves up, your plant will not be efficient enough in the environment to be healthy.
