Ron Bennett, it's pretty sad to take away forum functions in hopes of people becoming Cafe Members so they can send PM:

PM spam is a problem on many other large sites by "hit-and-run" users; folks sending out nonsense PMs wasting people's time.
Restricting PMs to Cafe Members only greatly reduces abuse (reduces server/db load too) and basically makes the PM system worthwhile for those with PM access - Cafe Members can be confident that the PM they receive will be worth the time reading, and the person sending it is likely a real person as opposed to a spam "bot", etc.
Thank you for your comments.
Ron

Yes that is a very legitimate point, so then make PM available to members with X amount of posts that is a more legitimate reason to give them this access, then to just say you can only have it if you pay.
200 Posts is not someone hanging around on a forum to spam, if so they certainly don't have much of a life to wait till they get to number 200 before they can spam someone.
So lets keep this all within reason, rank on some forums has it's privileges, and 200 posts on this should be privilege enough to keep in contact with others through PM.

200 posts? ... well, I guess that counts me out ... I'm only at 152 posts, including this one, total; you too, since you appear to be at 78 posts as of this reply.
One's reputation / intent can't be determined from their post totals nor even how often they login to read the boards nor how long they have been registered - all of these are unreliable indicators.
I understand your point and perhaps a variety of technical measures (ie. number of posts, IP range, session heuristics, time on-line, etc) could be used to determine if one should be granted PM access or not ...
However, charging a membership fee is a much easier way, which doesn't require lots of programming / maintenance, to reduce abuse, while also helping to cover the high operating costs of running this website.
I realize we may never agree on this, but explaining why it is the way it is ... hope you understand.
Ron
p.s. you may want to add a AIM/Yahoo/MSN, etc contact into your profile - the icon(s) will show up on your posts - many folks here communicate privately through those services.

So is paying money, can't determine one's reputation either, someone that has alot of posts in the several hundreds is going to be a more reliable individual. Excuse me, I have been in this business 15 years I said before I know what I'm talking about.
TIme is money, and a spammer is not going to sit around on some forum trying to rack up several hundred posts just so they finally get a chance to spam people.

Sheesh, Das, you're sure racking up the posts by complaining a lot.
