I thought this might be a good place to share opinions on police.. not necessarily police as people.. but the whole concept of law enforcement.
For years i've had a deep resentment for police, I think some of it came from my friends, part of it will be my own prejudices against authority.. and also the fucking hassle i've had from them.. nothing serious.. just like.. ugh.. stop searches, talks aimed at intimidating me, things like that. All it's done basically is reinforced my hatred.. made me think I was right.
But then.. a couple weeks ago I found myself in a position where I needed police. Bit of a riot broke out, and I was too stoned to defend myself. I sat back and observed as the police turned up from all directions with their riot shit and ninja beating stick guys.. and.. being stoned.. it set me off thinking loads.
What would the world be like without police.. even for 2 days. Surely things would just crumble to dust...
I dunno.. it just gave me a bit of a revelation, maybe some more respect for them.. but.. yeah im still trying to make some sense of it.

there are some good cops. There are too many bad cops, many of whom were not bad people before they became cops. Look up the Standford prison study and you'll understand what I mean. I think the power we give them as the enforcers of the law has expanded to enforcers of social norms and morals. Cops scare me and I dont trust them. I used to, but after 6 months on crutches as a result of DC's finest it would have been ridiculous for my views not to change.
Believe it or not some societies live without fear of those that they pay to protect them. It is possible for the police and the people to live in harmony, and where they do everyone is much safer because of it. In order to have that kind of lifestyle here we would need to have widespread changes in many different aspects of social policy, reform, and interpretations of inequality and how to implement human rights as a part of US culture. I am not optimistic of any such thing happening any time soon.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for the police and what they do. They are just following orders, and that is their job. The legislation is what I can't stand. I don't agree with politicians today refusing to reform policy that was based on Aslinger's racist views and stereotypes about Marijuana. I see that as ignorance, but when it comes down to cops, there are good ones and inconsiderate ones ( there are also hardened ones, who have heard so much bullshit they've become numb to it ) The bottom line is they are out there everyday hoping to make it safer for everyone, and its a shame that some think eradicating one of God's herbs does that.

We need to take into consideration also that just knowing there are consequences for actions is a big part of reducing crime.

I dont think most of the damage done by police is in response to cannabis laws, although there is a very good amount of it. I think a lot of the problems come from the way they are trained. Look at what just happened in LA. I would be willing to bet if they had been trained better and told realistically what to expect things would have turned out much differently.

that is not true at all. Both general and specific deterrence methods have been proven to be much more ineffective than law enforcement would ever want to admit. The best way to minimize crime is to maximize prevention techniques.
