SEGOLENE ROYAL yesterday labelled Nicolas Sarkozy a "dangerous" man whose victory would "trigger violence and brutality across the country".

Her attack came as a battery of opinion polls predicted defeat at best and humiliation at worst for the Socialist candidate in today's election.

"He's a good actor. He can hide his real self," Ms Royal railed at a gathering of her supporters in Brittany. "But don't be fooled."

Evoking a battle of good and evil, she urged France to renounce Mr Sarkozy because he pandered to "the darkest sides of the human spirit".

Instead she called for a celestial victory, intoning: "Rise up for the truth, rise up for the light."
