If we're going to go by just the first drug that people try, then alcohol and tobacco are the real gateway drugs.

But there is no denying that weed is usually the first illegal drug people try, and often people who smoke weed do go on to harder stuff. Why? Well, because it's available to them! Once you start smoking weed, you start interacting with drug dealers and the black market. People who don't smoke weed are usually not in contact with this community, so they are statistically unlikely to try harder drugs.

It is the illegality of weed that causes this correlation. Someone who drinks beer and smokes cigarettes is not likely to start blowing lines of coke, because all the people he deals with to get his drugs don't have any coke for him. If weed were legal, and you could just pick up a pack of joints at your local convenience store, then a lot fewer people would be exposed to these more harmful drugs.

ok well, the point i was trying to get across was that if some one had educated him maybe it would have helped him and he would have known what he was in for.

At that time because of his young age it wasn't excepted by any of his peers and even though our group of friends still hung out with him his marijuana use wasn't excepted. He eventually got caught with the weed at school and was expelled. Then all the parents, teachers and everyone saw him as a bad kid and he got this idea in his head that all drugs were seen just as bad as each other drug so once he found out that reefer wasn't that bad he moved on to s*****s, then the next drug then the next drug and then the next drug because no one ever taught him the difference between all these drugs and he tought since he took one drug and lived they were all ok. Last I heard he was in bad condition, he had some heart problems (16 yo). Now I don't even know if he's still breathing.

    It's unfortounate.
What is the difference? They all get you high. There's something obscure about this post. When a drug is introduced to the brain it's effects will be the same regardless of what he knows about it. Knowledge is irrelevant. Actually, you might want to forget everything you thought you knew because an alteration of consciousness is inevitable. However, it is sad that he has health problems now.

Of course education is very important. Ultimately there's no way of getting rid of these harder drugs, so the best thing we can do is let people know what they are and what will happen if they take them. People often mistrust warnings against these really harmful drugs because they know how much the government exaggerates claims and makes some harmless substances out to be extremely harmful. If we did not resort to lies to make some drugs seem worse than they really are, people would take us more seriously when we warn them against the stuff that can really fuck their lives up.

We are supposedly educating children so they can become adults capable of making rational, well thought out life decisions. Proper education about drugs is the only way to make sure they truly understand the consequences of the options available to them and are able to come to a rational, well thought out decision of their own about what to do and what not to do. Making blanket statements like "all drugs are always extremely bad for you" is only going to undermine that ability.

"Proper education." That's right. Now, where does this loop take us? Through the webs of corrupt politicians that's where! I might take it unto myself to inform the youth of the true danger lurking around the corner, two streets down, left at the stop-sign, hidden away two houses down your left side. It's me! I smoke weed! Why do I care?! What will I tell them? Eventually their intellect will demand an explanation of my passion for cannabis. I know what I'll say! "Don't shoot heroin!"
