Well... they may imagine it, but its completly different than "understand" how it feels. I can describe you how tastes some food, describe it like sweet, crunchy, etc, but the imagination will never can be compared with actually tasting the food.
And this descriptions are limited. Being stoned is another complete state of consciousness, like dreaming, or being awake (sober), and we only can describe parts of it. The complete experience have many undescriptible (sp?) components, just because there is no words created to describe such feelings, so all we can describe is that small part of the experience that can be understood in terms of daily concepts.

The absolute position yes, but changing the side of the board youre looking from, and therefore changing the point of view, can made you aware of new ways to understand the game, new angles. Viewing the game from the viewpoint of your adversary, you can understand better your own weaknesses, for example, and try to fix them. Or looking far from the board, to have an overall view of the game, and so... there is a lot of examples...
