It doesn't seem that fire breathing would be a very good thing to have, evolutionarily speaking. Fire mostly just burns you, preventing you from passing on your genes. I can't imagine how it could stick around long enough to evolve aiming mechanisms for really big flames that make it useful for killing prey or whatever that would outweigh the huge risks of dealing with fire all the damn time.
And keep in mind that dragons do not breathe fire in Chinese mythology. Fire-breathing dragons appear only in Medieval European depictions.

Komodo dragons have a specialized gum tissue structure that breeds over a dozen identified varieties of bacteria... a bite from a Komodo is certain death by infection, and how they kill prey that is too big for them to fight... it wanders off, dies, and then they go looking for it.
See, THIS is Nature's way of problem solving! Keep it simple stupid!
The evolution of flame is so outrageously improbable for the exact reasons oneironaut stated.
It would be more likely (still not likely... but MORE likely, lol) that they could FART fire, lol... at least methane (flammable hydrocarbon, exists as a gas at body temperature) is already a byproduct of digestion... hahahahaha I can just imagine St. George battling his big ol' dragon, and the thing turns around and RIPS one at him....

It wouldn't just evolve to spit fire if it still burned its throat and shit no? Maybe they could've developed a way to combine two reactive chemicals made by its body into a stream coming out of glands in its mouth.
Snakes spit venom, why couldn't a highly evolved giant reptile spit chemicals?
I dont even know why im arguing this point.
