Yes, there are flying lizards. Gliding lizards actually, but they're interesting nonetheless. Well, except they don't really breathe fire. Perhaps they were one of the inspirations for the dragon myth.

No, but there must be some reason why dragons show up in Chinese and European mythologies. If they died out long before human culture, they would have been no more familiar to our ancestors than trilobites.

Well, when? It would be real easy to figure this out. Just take your favorite dragon remains and do some radiometric dating. So...what do the tests say? Nothing, because for some strange reason our laboratories never got shipped any specimens of dragons, unicorns, leprechauns, fairies, or Loch Ness monsters.

the komodo dragon isn't in the iguana family, they're a member of the monitor lizards...
