One million Turks rally against government
ISTANBUL (Reuters) - As many as one million people rallied in a sea of red Turkish flags in Istanbul on Sunday, accusing the government of planning an Islamist state and demanding it withdraw its presidential candidate.
Despite the protests and a threat from the powerful army to intervene in the election, Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, architect of Turkey's EU membership drive, said he would remain the ruling AK Party's candidate for head of state.
The protesters flooded the streets of Turkey's largest city, praising the army and denouncing Gul and Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, whose AK Party enjoys a huge parliamentary majority, as a threat to a secular order separating state and religion.
"Turkey is secular and will remain secular," and "government resign," they chanted.

I certainly hope you're right. A secular Turkey is definently in our best interest. It amazes me the people went out against the islamists, It's usually the islamists that are in the streets waving flags and burning ours and Israels. A refreshing change. The people of Turkey must enjoy a decent lifestyle, as opposed to say the Palestinians, or Syrians, or Lebanese. Actually there is even somewhat of a middle class in Iran. The youth of Iran don't want to be restricted by Sharia law and the majority of Iranians are under thirty. If the US just keeps their hands off, eventually Iran will go secular and with a little finnesse, can be brought into the modern world. Too bad we've fucked up Iraq so badly. We'll never be allowed to rebuild it and even if we were, it would bankrupt us even worse than Bush already has. Now P4B, tell me you approve of the Bush regimes deficit spending. If he were running his house like he's run the country, he'd of been in Bankrupt court 3 years ago, probably should be in Debtors prison, that's our money he has fucked away. I'd like to have just 1 minute of the interest on that debt, I'd be set for life..
