Hmm.. Could be various causes. When I was a n00b at rolling, I found that they wouldn't stay lit when I rolled them too loosely. Try to keep the paper thickness even (roll a wide joint or cut off any excess paper so the paper overlaps slightly), might want to try the pencil technique if you don't mind taking the easy way out.
