It's a double-standard.
Tobacco and MJ were used equally for a long time.
It wasn't until the 1930's that MJ was made illegal.
After the Mexicans were run out of Southwest U.S. after the Mexican-American War they slowly began to come back to the Southwest to work as helping hands on the lands that were taken away from them.
Once here, some Mexicans were getting drunk and high, and were getting into trouble.
In the 30's the US was going through The Depression, and they saw Mexicans as scapegoats for The Depression. They were repatriated back to Mexico and since they were the ones bringing MJ here Congress voted to make MJ illegal in the U.S.
That's the only reason why, not because it was dangerous.

Even though tobacco kills people it is still legal because the Tobacco companies give Congress a lot of money to get re-elected. So, why make tobacco illegal. It's like biting the hand that feeds you.
