More LIGHT= bigger yield HOWEVER overcrowding can hurt your yield.

This is what I think was going on with your though:

If in the same space increasing your plant count is increasing your yield, you were not using your light properly to begin with and should have vegged longer to get a canopy that optimizes light use.

So it seems you are on your way.
