Try to adjust the angle of pipe to mouth contact ratio.
Roatate the pipe up and down, side to side as you inhale. The result will change the point where the inhale hits your lung.

Lite the bud, then take the lighter away. That also may be your probelm.
You may want to try a screen. If your smoking cut-up but you may be getting burning embers in your throat.

Anyway, I really wanted to try them out, so I met up with my mates and tried the bong, which was sweet as fuck, smoked really well, and got us blazed.. Then I decided to try the hand pipe.. It's about 5 inches long, glass, and looks pretty nice.. but whenever I try and take a hit from it, it burns the back of my throat something crazy!! It's horrible to smoke out of, so I gave up and used the bong.. Now, Rating: 5
