Here's the problem

I recently bought a new bong, and a new hand pipe kind of thing.. Anyway, I really wanted to try them out, so I met up with my mates and tried the bong, which was sweet as fuck, smoked really well, and got us blazed.. Then I decided to try the hand pipe.. It's about 5 inches long, glass, and looks pretty nice.. but whenever I try and take a hit from it, it burns the back of my throat something crazy!! It's horrible to smoke out of, so I gave up and used the bong.. Now, i've smoked out of pipes millions of times, but it had been a while.. So, without sounding like a full-on noob, what the fuck am i doing wrong? LOL thanks
