Holy crap, I've harvested one of my sativas and kept a lot of leaves on it, it look ed hella shocked and started growing weird branches. Then started producing buds maybe 3 weeks after the initial harvest. After maybe 2 months, the plant became erratic and became yellow and droopy, so they lose their momentum if you chop them up. personal opinion

by the way, the sativa was over a year old.
