    Questions about Topping and Turning

Ok, I have always topped my plants pretty early in their growth but now I am hearing that I should not top them so early. What age and size are people topping their plants at as a rule? And after topping how long are people waiting before they go to 12/12 lighting?

Does anyone turn their plants to 12/12 at a certain number of nodes or do most people go by the general height of the plant? For instance: I have two plants, same age, same strain. One is about 12 inches and the other has this weird curly thing going on so it is much shorter despite having the same number of nodes etc. If i wait until this plant is 12 inches before I turn it.....well you can guess what some of the others will be like by then. But it did make me wonder why the casual rule for turning the plants to blooming goes by plant height rather than by the number of nodes. :wtf:

BTW I grow hydro fyi......soil frightens me.

    Questions about Topping and Turning

    Hey sis .
Sorry no mail bk. yest. damnd holidays .
In the last pic. I got your room looked smaller ? Are you able to move any of the mylar'd walls i saw ? I found that if you wait to long for slower plants to catch up the others may get to big on you . Our bb mutant was slower than snot too last grow .

Reason I ask is because of your first paragraph here . This will vary from person to person because of height / space limitations . I've read alot of ppl. don't even top until theres alternating nodes going on but thats way late in my room because of height limits .

Unless you can make your space bigger I'd go 12/12 soon going by the last pic. I saw .
    Peace guys

    Questions about Topping and Turning

Hummm ..... I'm not sure I get that one about not flowering until they show sex .... I don't get it .... how can they show sex without flowering? Pre-flowers? .... not all strain get them.

.... anyway I wait until the 4th true leaves come out before I top .... they usually come out pretty nice.

I go by height rather than age before I put a plant on the flower level. :hippy:

    Questions about Topping and Turning

    i've never had a strain that dosn't pre-flower

anyhoo, you really cant generalize about these things. it depends mainly on the growing style

personaly i flower a plant when there is room in the grow room. so we flower all different sizes of plants (somewhat trying to find what yields best)

    Questions about Topping and Turning

Its is said that its best to flower after pre flowers are shown or after 6th node what ever but i agree this is down to other factors like heght, time ,space and imo strain . I have been folowling mobays grows for the last 2 years and due to circumstances he can only afford vegging for 1 week with some strains and it has been very intresting seeing some of his results like nebula he yeilded exeptoinaly well for only a week veg, with big bud he done real well with but some strains like ice 2000 didnt handle that short of veg.Its really down to each grower.I weight till pre flowers have shown before flower but mobays now takes a cutting from each strain in flower and keeps the clone thats mother does best in flower and keeps that as a mother and clones get a week veg now. but it just shows it can be done.look up one of his threads on nebula the results are very intresting.the postman.

    Questions about Topping and Turning

you can top at anytime, anywhere in veg. i hve made viney monsters by toppint at the first or second node, and i have the cristmas candle look by topping at the 10+ node just before flower.

topping is topping, there realy is no right or wrong way. all about preference. but, imo, those topped early, then lst'd and topped again yeild the most of any yeild experiment i've tried (including extra long veg)

    hope that helps...
