Why have you given into the guilt trip of the "sin" meme? It frustrates me to see so many people giving into this pessimistic Christian view of human nature, and basing their decisions on the idea that all people are somehow inherently evil.

We are not sinners. Sin is a myth. Immoral actions are not immoral because they make your God angry; they are immoral because they deliberately cause harm to the feelings of others.

We are humans, and we all do the right thing most of the time. We are not inherently evil, although we do occasionally do bad things. We've actually made amazing progress in morality as a society. Most people no longer tolerate slavery, racism, sexism, child abuse, lynching, or torture, to mention just a few things that were considered perfectly fine in olden days.

Christian, Muslim, Jew, Hindu, Buddhist, atheist or agnostic, we all seem to have more or less the same moral foundation. We don't want to hurt other people unnecessarily, we want to see justice enacted, we want to be cared for and we want to care for the people we love. Whether they realize it or not, people generally don't base their morality on religion. They base their morality on consideration of other people's feelings in a very utilitarian way.

It's not that you want to rape and kill and steal, but you can't because you're too afraid God will punish you if you do. God or no God, you generally don't want to do these things in the first place, since you recognize that they are wrong because you care about the feelings of others and you realize these activities hurt the feelings of others.

You probably ignore those bits of the Bible that declare as "sinful" things which don't hurt the feelings of others. Eating shellfish, wearing clothing woven from two fabrics, and touching a menstruating female are all sins according to the same Old Testament that gives us the Ten Commandments, but I doubt you're going to call these things immoral. That's because you base your morality not on your religion but on sympathy and utilitarianism, even though you may use religious ideas to back up the utilitarian ideas you already hold.

You don't need to worship God. You don't need to worship anyone or anything. You have the power inside your own brain to tell right from wrong, and you don't need the purported words a mythological invisible father figure to tell you what to do and what to avoid doing. Live for yourself and for the people you love down here on Earth. You don't need to get on your knees and grovel to some imaginary "higher power" to lead a fulfilling life. All you need to do is live for love and peace and happiness, and to do what you think will make the world a better place to be. Don't let ancient texts and superstitious preachers tell you how to lead a good life. Don't let anybody tell you how to lead a good life. Do it for yourself.
