I agree with exactly what you said about how our ego gets in the way of knowing Jesus/enlightenment/nirvana/whatever you want to call it. But in this way Jesus even instructs to be extroverted. The new testament preaches service more than anything. Like when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples which was a task not even a slave had to perform. Jesus said that washing the feet of his disciples was an example of how humbly we should help and serve others.

Of course though, if one performs service and helps others only with the goal of entering heaven or some other metaphysical gratification he is wrong. One must completeley believe that serving and helping others is what is important. Heaven is not important. What we do on earth is important. For Too long people have been scared into believing for fear of going to hell [if the didnt belive]. and it has been too long that people have done good only with a personal goal of heaven in mind. Do goodness for the sake of others and goodness. Not for yourself.
