They were protestants, but left the Church of England to set up their own organization - which was illegal. Sixty-six Mayflower passengers, called the "Strangers", were not part of the religious separatist movement, nor is there any evidence that they had any problems with England. One of my ancestors was John Howland. He arrived as an indentured servant to John Carver, who was chosen to be the governor of the new colony at Plymouth. George W. Bush is also a descendant of John Howland, and a 12th cousin of mine through this genealogical relationship.
