I could really use some advice

First off, I'm new to the forum, but have lurked here for over a year and have learned some really cool stuff from some of you. Anyway, back to the reason for my post. Basically, I am a college student and have been smoking for a little over a year now. I am very close with my parents and talk to them about just about everything.

After the first time I smoked I told them about it and everything was cool. I've had some talks with my dad, who is just a really cool guy. He's very understanding of everything, told me he used to smoke a lot, you get the picture. He knows that I smoke around once a week, maybe more and doesn't really have a problem with it. My mom on the otherhand only knows that I've smoked a few times. Now, my dad's best friend from college lives about 10 minutes away and I am good friends with her son....I have known him my whole life and our families are extremely close. My mom is now best friends with her too.

Sorry for the backstory but it kinda needs to be told for you to understand my situation. Anyway, a few weeks ago my family was over at there house for a Bar Mitzvah after party (one of their other son's was bar mitzvahed). I went to go smoke in my friends car and as we are smoking, he lays it on me......"I just smoked with my mom and your mom". I was instantly shocked. I really couldn't believe it. He then told me that he smokes with his mom fairly often and that my mom and her mom smoke all the time together, especially when they bake cookies together, haha. Must be why they are so damn good . But he told me that my mom didn't want me to know, which made me feel a bit weird.

Then, last week he was over at my house for my dad's 50th birthday party and I'm smoking in his car again and he told me that my dad still smokes with his mom and my mom and stuff. Now, he has found out all this from his mom and was told not to tell me any of it 'cus they don't want me knowing. But here I am, my dad knows I smoke, my mom knows I have smoked, and I just find out from one of my best friends taht they still do fairly often and that I am not supposed to have any knowledge of it. I don't know what to feel really. I kinda wanna bring it up to them, but I don't want them getting upset, or getting my friend in trouble for telling me all of this. Once again, I'm really sorry for the long post, but if you guys could give me some insight on my situation I would really appreciate it.

well then you parents will obvioulsy not freak out on you they will understand, it was the same way for me, just knida make fun of it for them like oh yeah u must smoke lots in the 60's eh, yeah i bet you still smoke and make them admit they smoke then be like yeah i toke once and a while too.

like conch said, joke around about it and try and get them to tell you without making it obvious that you know so you can spare your friend from anything. maybe once they tell you you all can toke up together.

yeah my parnts know i toke, and i know they toke.. i still cant wait untill they day i smoke some with them, it just hasnst happend yet

Yea, I'm going home next weekend for Easter, so maybe I'll try to do something like that. I just kinda feel weird that I've always been very open with them and told them that I smoke so why are they hiding it from me. I'm 20 years old, I can handle the fact that my parents smoke. Well, ElementalEffect! I don't think there is anything you should worry too much about unless you think that there are darker secrets that your families are keeping behind closed doors from the nice society you kids inhabit...but you tell me! ...let's see:

From my own experience I am a little suspicious of people that admit openly that their families are "very close"...what do you mean?

Haha. No, our families don't have sex together. I was stressing the closeness because it enforces the fact that I beleive my friend and there is no reason for him to lie to me and the fact that we've all been family friends for my entire life and it seems like everyone knows about this but me. Funny joke, but I'd like to try to keep this serious.

yeah even though you admit to them you smoke they're your parents and they might not want you to think badly of them...i don't know i'm just expressing my concerns

i've smoke with my parents and my maternal grandparents so we've always been open i do feel sorry for you though because you're their child and they should be able to trust you with something like that esp since you smoke too!!!
