simple question on lights

i am very new to growing so my question probably sounds stupid


but y does everyone use those high wattage lights.......whats wrong with using a regular lamp?

That's like asking why some one would rather use the sun instead of waiting for the moon to come out to expose your plants for light...Plants thrive off of light and that's how it's growth progresses. Without light it can't grow, without enough light you get shitty results...

1 400w hps is equal to 30-35 26w cfl's; 'nuff said.

a regular light will not emit enough lumens for the light to grow properly, thats why you have some stretch by a window like mine 1st did but if you get those low power in but high wattage out CFL's you can get a good 1st grow started

the higher the wattage though you tend to get more heat off say a High pressure sodium or whatever type bulb you want so you need more ventilation and temperature control, also you would need a ballast to give you all that power so you might choose a light based upon what type of arrangement you have, choose one that bests suites your situation

I've gotten great results with using only CFLS's granted not as good as it would have been with an HID light,but still!

However incandescents, heat lamps, black lights, mercury etc will not work for growing. Wrong spectrums and/or produce too much heat.

mercury vapor works fine(5900k or 6500k), just inneficient compared to anything similar.
